One year to the day from the beginning of last November's devastating US
assault on the Iraqi city of Fallujah, an assault that saw hundreds killed,
tens of thousands displaced and the majority of the city destroyed, this
special screening and discussion considers the political implications of
such strategies.
OCCUPATION DREAMLAND (Official selection, Human Rights Watch International
Festival 2005)
Directors: Garrett Scott, Ian Olds, USA, 2005
An unflinchingly candid portrait of a squad of American soldiers deployed in
the doomed Iraq city of Falluja during the winter of 2004. A collective
study of the soldiers unfolds as they patrol an environment of low-intensity
conflict creeping steadily towards catastrophe. Through the squad's
activities "Occupation: Dreamland" provides a vital glimpse into the last
days of Falluja.
TESTIMONIES FROM FALLUJAH
Director: Hamodi Jasim, 2004, 28 mins
One of the most violent acts of the current occupation of Iraq was the
almost complete destruction of the city of Falluja in last November's siege
and assault by US forces. There were no Western news crews inside the city,
even Al-Jazeera had left. This film comprises video testimonies from inside
the besieged city, along with footage of injuries and civilians under fire.
It provides a concise introduction to the historical roots of resistance to
the occupying forces in the city and it conveys a real sense of what such
attacks can do to a community.
Images of the Falluja assault are scarce, which makes this event all the
more resonant. To consider these and other issues, Gareth Evans (Editor,
Vertigo magazine) with author and activist MILAN RAI, founder of Voices in
the Wilderness UK and author of "War Plan Iraq" and "Regime Unchanged", who
visited Fallujah on several occasions during the sanctions years.

[B] "100 PROTESTS" CONTINGENCY PLAN FOR THE 100TH BRITISH MILITARY DEATH IN
IRAQ
Message from the Stop the War Coalition web-site (www.stopwar.org.uk):
We fear that soon the 100th British soldier will die in Iraq.
It is important that this moment does not pass unnoticed or unprotested.
Military families have asked that the British people mark the day that
figure is reached with protests and vigils
The day the 100th soldier's death is reported members of Military Families
Against the War (www.mfaw.org.uk) will lead a vigil in Parliament Square and
the names of these 100 soldiers and of 100 Iraqi dead will be read out.
The next day there will be 100 similar protests in 100 towns across the
country. We call on every Coalition group and all our supporters to prepare
for this now.

[C] VISIT PALESTINE (80 minutes). NFT3 8.30pm, Monday November 7th.
“An astonishing piece of work, a wonderful film…quite unlike anything I’ve
seen.” John Pilger.
What drives a young, well-educated Westerner to volunteer as a “peace
activist” in the Middle East? Caiomhe Butterly is one of a growing number of
volunteers who risk their own safety to intervene in the long-running and
bloody conflict between Israel and Palestine. Several internationals,
including her, have now been injured. Some have died.
In this film, she describes witnessing the aftermath of the attack on Jenin
in April 2002. The film follows her work, the main emphasis being “the
accompaniment of communities at risk”. Despite being threatened, shot in the
leg and deported later that year, she is determined to go back. In the
interim, she brings her story back to her native Ireland at public meetings,
receives a Time Magazine “European Hero Award”, and travels to post-war Iraq
to visit the Palestinian refugee camps. She arrives back in Jenin, shortly
before a young woman from that community, Hanadi Jaradat, blows herself up
in a suicide bombing in Haifa.
Activists such as Butterly are usually stereotyped as lunatics, meddlers or
saints. This film offers an insight into a brave, honest, determined yet
self-critical woman who takes direct action to the limit, with no quest for
glory. She also serves as a conduit into the everyday lives of Palestinians,
who are also usually presented to the viewer in a one-dimensional way, as
fighters or victims, heroes or fanatics. The film gives us a rare chance to
see what she calls “the spaces of beauty and joy” created by a people under
occupation.
National Film Theatre, South Bank, London SE1 8XT. Box Office 0207 928 3232.

SPEAKING TOUR WITH RAHUL MAHAJAN
"During the course of the roughly four hours we were at that small clinic,
we saw perhaps a dozen wounded brought in. Among them was a young woman, 18
years old, shot in the head. She was seizing and foaming at the mouth when
they brought her in; doctors did not expect her to survive the night" (Rahul
Mahajan in Fallujah, April 2004).
Rahul Mahajan, a US author and activist, was in Fallujah during the April
2004 siege of the city. He is the author of “The New Crusade: America’s War
